At present, there are many books on how to establish roaming user profiles in NT, but most of them have many theories and few examples, and even if there are a few examples, they are not coherent. In response to this situation, the author uses a specific example to explain the detailed process of establishing a roaming user configuration file. The network in this example is an NT network, and there is only one domain in the network. The computer of the main domain controller is named "HP", and the operating system is Windows NT Server 4.0. There is a workstation in the domain named "LX", and the operating system is Windows NT Workstation 4.0. Now if you want to create a roaming user profile for Gwy, a user of "LX", you must go through the following steps:
Step 1: Create a subdirectory User anywhere on HP, and then create another subdirectory Gwy in the User (of course, it can also be put together with the local user configuration file on HP, such as: \\HP\Winnt\Pros\Gwy), and set User to share.
Step 2: Create an account "Gwy" on the domain user manager, and then fill in the path in the configuration file path of its configuration file dialog box: "\\HP\User\Gwy". Fill in the login script name in the login script name. If there are no special requirements after login, you can not fill in this item. To experiment with its effect, in this example, a self-written file is used to list files in the host directory. In the login script name, fill in: "" and put it in "\HP\Winnt\System32\Repl\Import\Scripts". In the host directory, enter: Connect "X" to "\\HP\Winnt". Where "X" is the name given to the host directory, and "X" is essentially the mapped network drive name, which is automatically connected every time you log in, but be careful not to rename it with any drive on "LX", otherwise it will be invalid. As for the "Winnt" item in "\\HP\Winnt", you can optionally be any other directory that needs to be shared, but pay attention to the correctness of the shared name. In this example, if "Winnt" is created by the system during installation, it is very likely to use the default hidden share name "Admin$". At this time, if "Winnt" is used as the share name, you will get an error message, or the connection effect is not achieved recently.
Step 3: Create a configuration file for "Gwy", two methods can be used:
Method 1: Create manually in "\\HP\User\Gwy", copy the user profile that you think is similar to the goal you want to achieve from "\\HP\Winnt\Pros\%Username%" to "\\HP\User\Gwy", and then make appropriate modifications according to your needs.
Method 2: Log in with the "Gwy" account on "LX", so that the system will create a set of default user configuration files for "Gwy", and after appropriate modifications, such as wallpaper color, startup menu, desktop settings, shortcuts, etc. After meeting your requirements, open the "Control Panel", open the "System Icon", switch to the "User Profile" tab, select "Gwy", click the "Copy to" button, select the "Gwy" folder on "HP" in the pop-up dialog box, click OK, and "\\LX\Winnt\Pros\Gwy" will be copied to "\\HP\User\Gwy".
At this point, the establishment of the configuration file of the roaming user has been completed. Let’s briefly try out how effective it is. First log out of the login on "LX", and then add a bitmap image in "\\HP\User\Gwy\Desktop". Then log in again on "LX". After logging in, you will find that there is a DOS running window suddenly on the screen, and there are rows of directories scrolling upwards. Don't be surprised, that's one of our experimental small login scripts "" lists its subdirectories in its host directory "X" (i.e. \\HP\Winnt)! After the login script is executed, you will find a new bitmap image appears on the screen. This is the bitmap image that has just been added to the configuration file on "HP". If you want to set the configuration file as mandatory, just change the name of "" in the "Gwy" folder in "HP" to "".
